I am deeply honoured and pleased to have been invited to join Keir Starmer and John Healey for the launch of Labour’s triple lock on the UK’s nuclear deterrent. This event underscored our unwavering commitment to keeping our country safe—a foundational principle that the British people rightly expect from their government.

As a former serviceman, I have a unique perspective on the state of our Armed Forces. Over the past 14 years under Tory governance, I have witnessed a troubling decline in our military’s capabilities and morale. The Army has been reduced to its smallest size since the Napoleonic era, recruitment targets have been consistently missed, and morale is at an all-time low. These are not mere statistics; they represent a significant weakening of our national defence at a time when global threats are evolving and increasing.

Our Armed Forces are the backbone of our national security, and they deserve better. The current state of our military is unsustainable, and the risks posed by another five years under Conservative leadership are too great. Our service members need and deserve a government that prioritises their welfare, resources, and strategic importance.
A Labour government will ensure that Britain is better defended. Our commitment to the triple lock on the UK’s nuclear deterrent is a testament to our dedication to maintaining and enhancing our national security infrastructure. We understand that a robust and well-supported military is crucial for the stability and safety of our nation.
The launch of Labour’s triple lock on the UK’s nuclear deterrent is not just a policy announcement; it is a promise to the British people that their safety and security will be safeguarded under a Labour government. We are ready to restore confidence in our national defence and provide the support our Armed Forces need to protect our country effectively. Britain’s future security depends on this crucial change in leadership.
