Rebuilding Britain’s Defence: A Veteran’s Perspective

Bayo Alaba Parachute Regiment

As someone who has proudly served in the Parachute Regiment Reserves, I have firsthand experience of the dedication, training, and resilience required to defend our country. My military training taught me the importance of preparedness, discipline, and the critical need for a well-supported and robust armed forces. It is with this background that I must express my concerns over recent political propositions and the current state of our defence system.

Recently, there has been talk from Prime Minister Rishi Sunak about conscripting 18-year-olds into the military. As a veteran, I can confidently say that our armed forces do not need conscripted teenagers who lack the necessary maturity and training. What we need are committed, well-trained, and adequately supported full-time personnel who are prepared for the complexities of modern warfare and defence.

Over the past decade, the Conservative government has made significant cuts to our military, reducing the number of full-time personnel by 50,000 since 2010. This has not only weakened our defence capabilities but has also placed an undue burden on the remaining service members. These cuts have been a step in the wrong direction, undermining the strength and readiness of our forces.

The proposal to conscript 18-year-olds seems like a policy aimed more at winning votes than genuinely addressing the issues within our armed services or understanding the true defence needs of our country. Such measures are short-sighted and fail to consider the long-term implications for both national security and the individuals involved.

What Britain needs is not a quick fix or populist policies, but a comprehensive plan to rebuild and secure our defence forces. This includes proper funding, adequate support for our service members, and a commitment to maintaining a professional and voluntary military force that can effectively protect our nation.

Together, we can put a stop to the chaos caused by the Tories. It’s time for a change—a change that prioritises the strength and security of our nation. Under Labour, we can build a better, more prosperous Britain. A Britain that honours its commitments to those who serve, invests in its future, and stands strong on the global stage.

Join me in supporting a vision for a stronger, more secure Britain. Let’s work together to rebuild our defence and ensure a brighter future for all.
