Ensuring Safety and Rebuilding Trust in Southend

Southend at night

Yesterday, some distressing scenes unfolded in our city of Southend. I drove around in the evening to witness the issues firsthand. While there were active crime scenes, the disorder had ceased by the time I arrived. Multiple arrests were made, and unfortunately some individuals were critically injured. My heartfelt thanks go out to the emergency services for their swift response in protecting our community.

Given the active nature of the case, I couldn’t comment much further at the time. However, this morning, I had important briefings with Essex Police to understand what happened and to strategise on preventing such incidents in the future. I am reassured by the robust measures being put in place to avert further disorder. Essex Police, along with the British Transport Police and the Metropolitan Police, are collaborating to ensure that the disruptions caused by outsiders do not recur in Southend.

The individuals who caused chaos were a small minority, but their actions were utterly inexcusable. My thoughts are with the local residents who were affected by the turmoil. This morning, I met with traders on the seafront and shared their frustration and determination: such incidents cannot be allowed to happen again.

In the coming days, I will continue to engage with local residents, businesses, and emergency services to begin rebuilding trust in our city. It is crucial that we work together to ensure Southend remains a safe and welcoming place for everyone. We will not tolerate violence and trouble from a disruptive minority.

Southend deserves better, and I am committed to doing everything in my power to help deliver that.

I will continue to share updates as and when I can. The safety of our community and implementing measures to prevent such incidents in the future remains a top priority.
