Yesterday, I had the privilege of joining Southend Against Sewage and Surfers Against Sewage for a powerful protest against the unacceptable dumping of raw sewage into our beautiful sea by Anglian Water. It was heartening to see so many passionate individuals coming together to protect our precious coastline.
Southend’s coastline isn’t just a geographical feature—it’s our superpower. It drives tourism, supports local businesses, and offers a sanctuary for residents and wildlife alike. However, this invaluable resource is under threat. The practice of discharging untreated sewage into the sea poses serious risks to our environment, public health, and the local economy.
As Labour’s parliamentary candidate for Southend East and Rochford, I have been vocal about what I see as a “decade of failure” regarding sewage-dumping on Southend’s beaches. Southend’s beaches should be the jewel in the crown of our coastline. Yet, we’ve been let down by a government that for years allowed water companies to self-regulate, effectively letting them mark their own homework. The consequences of this inaction are evident, with several high-profile news stories about water quality on our beaches emerging over the last year alone.
The recent decision to introduce external scrutiny on water companies is a step in the right direction, aligning with a long-held demand from Labour. However, for a seaside city like ours, this change needed to happen much sooner. The government has dragged its heels on this issue for far too long.
I stand firmly with Steve Reed MP, Labour’s Shadow Environment Secretary, in calling for the government to go further. It’s not enough to end self-monitoring of sewage discharges; we must also adopt policies that hold those at the top accountable. This includes outlawing annual bonuses for water bosses responsible for illegal sewage-dumping.
As your Labour Candidate, I am dedicated to fighting for the protection of our natural resources. This isn’t just about preserving the beauty of our coastline—it’s about ensuring a healthy and sustainable environment for future generations. I will continue to support and amplify the efforts of groups like Southend Against Sewage and Surfers Against Sewage, and hold Anglian Water accountable for their actions.

Our protest was a significant step in raising awareness and demanding change, but our work is far from over. We must continue to advocate for stricter regulations and better infrastructure to prevent sewage discharges. I encourage everyone to stay informed, get involved, and support local environmental initiatives.
Together, we can make a difference. Let’s protect Southend’s coastline and ensure it remains a vibrant, thriving part of our community for years to come.
